CHICAGO — Two women and a dog have been rescued after a building collapsed on Chicago's South Side, and authorities are conducting a search of the rubble even though they don't believe anyone else was inside.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the collapse of the modern three-story building Sunday evening in the Washington Park neighborhood "pancaked all floors toward the basement." He says the cause is unknown, but authorities are working with the utility companies to make sure there isn't a problem with the gas line.

Langford calls the operation a "search and rescue" but says interviews with friends and neighbors suggest there aren't other victims. He says an elderly woman was talking when taken to the hospital in serious to critical condition. A younger woman was rescued earlier.

The two people were in serious condition Sunday night after they were pulled from the rubble of a three-unit apartment building. The collapse followed an explosion on Chicago's South Side, some fire officials said.

The two people, one of them described as an elderly woman, were believed to be the only ones inside at the time of the explosion at the three-story building at East 58th Street and South Calumet Avenue, about a block from Washington Park, the fire department said. A dog was also rescued alive, collapsed they said.
