A police officer in South Carolina, charged with murder after a video emerged which appeared to show him shooting a black man in the back, has been sacked.
The victim, 50-year-old Walter Lamer Scott of Charleston, was shot on Saturday during a routine traffic stop after the officer had already hit him with a stun gun, authorities confirmed.
Walter Scott was stopped in South Carolina for a faulty brake light. He died after being shot in the back several times by a patrolman.
Officer Michael Slager was charged after a video taken by a bystander was handed over. The video appeared to show him shooting 50-year-old Walter Scott in the back.
Speaking during a news conference Mr Summey ( the Mayor ) added that not all of the video of the shooting has been made public. He also said that the city has been given a grant to order body cameras for officers.
At the end of the media briefing, a large group of protesters holding placards shouted, 'the Mayor's got to go'.
Protesters march over South Carolina police shooting
Protesters have held a rally in South Carolina against what they described as a culture of police brutality after a white officer was charged with murder after shooting dead an unarmed black man, Reuters reports.
Demonstrators held signs that read "The whole world is watching" and "Back turned, don't shoot," at a march held in the wake of the death of 50-year-old Walter Scott.
One of the speakers at the event, Ramon Roan, said: "There is an atmosphere of racism in North Charleston, and we need to get rid of it," as the crowd chanted "No more! No more!".
Slager is being held without bond on a murder charge that could carry the death penalty, according to court records.
